Hull Chess Club

A clean, user-focused redesign turning a local club into a welcoming online community.

The Challenge

How do you take a small community club with zero online traction and turn it into a place people want to join?
The old site was cluttered, hard to navigate, and invisible in search. It didn’t reflect the charm or intelligence of the game itself.

The Goal

Design a clean, intuitive digital experience that does two things:

  1. Raises visibility for Hull Chess Club.

  2. Makes joining as effortless as moving a pawn.

My Role

As the UX/UI Designer, I led the project end-to-end.
That meant stepping into the user’s shoes, defining what they needed, and building a system that worked, not just looked good.

  • Conducted user interviews and usability tests to identify friction points.

  • Created personas and empathy maps to visualise motivations.

  • Designed user journeys and information architecture for clarity.

  • Developed paper and digital wireframes, then evolved them from lo-fi to hi-fi prototypes in Figma.
